"I'm not a sinner! I lead a good life and do the best I can!" Let's be honest. Have you ever lied? Been selfish or unkind? Disobeyed road rules? Have you broken the commandment to "love the Lord you God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind, and love your neighbour as yourself?"
We all fail the test of obeying God's perfect standard, and the Bible puts it this way: "All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God" (Romans 3:23) |
And that is the bad news. The word translated sin in our English Bible means missing the mark, missing the bull's eye. No matter how narrowly an arrow misses that central mark, it's still a miss. And likewise, no matter how little we fall short of God's required standard, we still fall short, and that's called sin.
And because all of us fall short, we have so much heartache in this world, so many broken relationships, so much violence and sorrow. Our world has suffered shipwreck. |
